Fashion Week Trends To Try Now

Fashion week, or rather fashion month, happens twice a year in the world’s major fashion capitals and consists of runway shows where designers debut their upcoming collections, celebrities sit front row, and industry insiders get snapped in their interpretations of fashion week trends by lurking street style photographers. In short, it’s a great opportunity for gleaning outfit inspiration. Most of us won’t actually copy all of these looks from head-to-toe (we’re pretty sure they won’t serve us at Whole Foods if we’re wearing a sheer dress), but there’s a lot to learn from the pattern-mixing, creative styling and real-life spins on modern fashion. Here, we’re sharing a few inspiring looks as seen on the streets at New York Fashion Week.

Trend: Textured Tweeds & Plaids

Transitioning from summer to fall is challenging emotionally and sartorially. Saying goodbye to long, lazy days is just as difficult as dressing for schizophrenic weather, which is why layering is so key. Take a note from the Natalie and Dylana Suarez who demonstrate two ways to style the belted Cleobella cape. Natalie wears hers completely closed as a knit top, paired with a nubby tweed skirt in a warm hue and statement shoes with the layered gold Ettika necklace for a fun spin on ladylike glamour. Copy her look for the office by incorporating a white or black crewneck bodysuit under the cape.

Her sister Dylana showcases a more menswear-infused way to wear it, belting it over distressed black jeans and a plaid blazer with embellished patent shoes. Segue the look into colder weather by incorporating boots and a thin, ribbed turtleneck under the blazer.

Trend: Western

Happily Grey blogger Mary Lawless Lee channeled the western trend in New York, opting to use her B-Low the Belt wrap belt to close her bordeaux-printed capelet and finishing the look with a wide-brimmed hat and knee-high cowboy boots. The real genius of her look, though, is the crisp white shirtdress she layered underneath the cape. It’s lightweight enough for moderate temperatures, but also looks perfectly polished for the back-to-school season. Copy her look with sleek ankle boots if you’re not feeling the full western trend, or segue it to colder weather by simply layering your white button-up over black suede or leather pants.

Trend: Waist-Cinching

As the fall chill starts to creep in, you can’t leave home without a lightweight coat or jacket on hand. We’re obviously partial to a knit style, which is why we included the Cleobella Capelet in our Fall Box of Style. Make like Natalie Suarez and style yours open over a plaid suit and heels for the office. We love how she cinched her waist with the belt, a simple trick that defines your shape in an office-appropriate way. Her sister Dylana Suarez is a study in print mixing, teaming her printed bordeaux printed cape with bordeaux houndstooth trousers and a rocker tee. She uses her waist-cinching belt to break up the prints and adds rock and rock glamour with her layered Ettika necklace. Copy the look with a statement sweater in colder temperatures.
